Police are looking for a woman they believe stole donations — sold for a quarter apiece at a local nonprofit — from Dupo on Wednesday.
Dawn Putnam reported the theft to police Thursday evening, St. Clair County Sheriff’s Deputy Alexander Hawthorne wrote in a report. Putnam told the officer she had surveillance footage that showed a woman in a red Ford Sport Trac pickup taking a rocking chair and clothing from the donation center.
They could read the license plate number on the truck, Hawthorne wrote. Putnam believed the truck drove to the housing projects off Camp Jackson Road in Centreville.
Hawthorne could not locate the truck there and said he would later visit the O’Fallon address to which the truck is registered.
Her nonprofit group opened up a shop about a year ago after she and three other women operated out of homes, garages and storage sheds for several years.
The organization collects and distributes food, clothing and household items to anyone who needs them: the homeless, victims of fire or people who can use some assistance.
